Outlook: using POP to read Gmail
--http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/outlook-gmail.html
Update: listener Joe B. sent this email after the show:
"gmail does NOT follow proper POP3. This is what threw your guy -- the 2 crucial things are you cannot tell gmail to delete a message, you cannot read a message after you have already read it. Hence, he got it to "work once" and not again. I don't know why they do this but it is crazy. I use 1 program for my daily email and a 2nd completely separate one to collect the email from time to time -- this has saved me when Outlook Express did things like delete all messages.
"IMap does work properly, however, with gmail - the cool thing is that it leaves the email on the server unless you delete it so you can get it from your laptop then go to the office and still get it from your desktop, etc. (Like webmail for those who insist that webmail is good for that, except that, it arrives at my desktop along with my POP3 - about 2 dozen accounts -- I can't imagine having to log into 5 webmail accounts just to collect my email -- not a fan of usually much slower, loaded with ads, commands all different webmail.)"
